FREE ORGANIC TRAFFIC, IS THIS FOR REAL?
Welcome to this guide on how to get a free boost in organic traffic. For those of you who are thinking that this is some kind of BS, here’s proof for you.
Yes, I am not some SEO guru. But I have followed this method as taught by a guru, and it has worked for me over and over again like clockwork since.
What exactly is this method?
Maybe you have already heard of the “skyscraper technique”, and that is what I have used… with a small twist. But still, it is a powerful pure white hat SEO method that is worth learning, and let’s dive into it step-by-step.

WHAT IS SKYSCRAPER TECHNIQUE?
For you guys who are new to the SEO and content marketing world, the Skyscraper Technique is a baby of SEO grand master Brian Dean. In a nutshell, it involves :
- Finding a topic / article that is already doing well.
- Writing an even better article in attempt to “bait” people to link and share it.
- Then promoting the hell out of it.
Sounds easy? But trust me, it’s not that straightforward, and it takes a few tries to get this technique right. Once you got it, you can fairly easily duplicate the success over and over again.
Sound good? But there is one problem – How do you “do better” than the others? Plus, trying to win big players such as Forbes, WikiHow, and Wikipedia is not easy. So I have added a few small twists to the Skyscraper Technique. Let’s get into the details now.
In order to get traffic and people who will share your article, you need to first have a compelling topic plus valuable information. So for step 1, you need to find out the “next big thing” to talk about, and there are 3 ways to do it :
- Outdo articles that are already doing well.
- Write something for an upcoming trend.
- Create a new trend.
B1) OUTDO THE BEST
This is the original idea of the Skyscraper Technique. That is trying to outdo the best performing articles for your topic. For example, fidget spinners are the craze as at the time of writing. A search on Google for “fidget spinners” turns out top results from Wikipedia and Forbes… On “how a fidget spinner works”, and “the science behind fidget spinners”.
Sort of interesting, but how can it be better? Maybe a post on “101 fidget spinner hacks”, or “101 ways to make fidget spinners great again”. Now that will get you a ton of traffic if you have an interesting enough article, and promote it right.
But here’s the problem. Even if you promote your epic article, you might not even end up on the first 3 pages of search engines. Why? Because search engines have a tendency to favor the “big boys” more, and the big boys definitely have a lot more marketing power.
So here’s what I did instead – Don’t go head to head against the big boys as a small player. Find a topic that does not have “all big boys” on the first page of the search results… or you can score for an upcoming trend.
B2) WHAT IS UPCOMING?
SEO is not always “scoring for already popular topics”. For some topics, the market is already saturated with competition, and scoring for some of these popular trends can be very difficult. So the next smart thing to do, is to predict and score for the upcoming trends.
For example, there will be grand fireworks every 9 Aug here in Singapore for it is national day, AKA independence day. So what opportunity is there? I did some search on Google, and found that people are actually very interested to know the best places to shoot some nice fireworks photos.
So I created an ultimate post on the fireworks locations, timings, and added some useful tips along with it. Guess what? I did nothing much to it, and it simply exploded up to the first page over one weekend, with over a thousand clicks on it. Just like that.
Again, if you want to check out what is trending, or what is about to be trending – You can use Google Trends to help you.
B3) CREATING A NEW TREND
Now this, is the most difficult. But if you did it, you will be on top of the rest. Guaranteed. An example that I can think of, is a photographer called Justin Ng, and how he accidentally became an “SEO expert”.
Just what did he do? He took a photo of the milky way in Singapore. For you guys who are thinking “no big deal” – Have you even seen a sky full of stars in a big city? Never. Because of the light pollution, it is deemed “nearly impossible” for astrophotography in cities.
Yet, this guy managed to do it, and it exploded him into fame with a slew of photographers trying to replicate his works. Just do a search for “singapore astrophotography”, and you will find his blog as the very first result.
WRITING THE BEST ARTICLE
One of the keys to making a successful Skyscraper Technique, is a valuable article. The idea is to create a “grade S” article, and get interested people to share it automatically. If you have a short “yet another cute cat” post… that is not going to help much.
C1) NO TO THE BORING & CONFUSING STUFF
A boring article will be the end of it. Just think about it, what do people want to read? A simple, useful and exciting article, or a technical, confusing and boring article? The answer should be clear. Keep your posts simple and easy to read.
C2) GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT
We all make mistakes, but at least learn to get the obvious facts right. As much as possible. Just how embarrassing and credible are you when your facts are all wrong?
C3) GIVE MORE, A LOT MORE RELEVANT INFORMATION
How do you create a long beefy article, review or guide? Give more. For example, don’t just give the specs when you are reviewing a gadget. Do a small comparison, give alternatives, and give your opinions on what is good and bad – Give people the things that they are interested in.
C4) MORE WRITING TIPS
PROMOTE THY ARTICLE
As for the final ingredient, it’s promotion. Guess what happens after you write a good article? * The sound of silence. * Yep, nothing is going to happen when nobody knows about your article. Having money to promote stuff is good, but there are free ways to do it as well.
D1) SOCIAL MEDIA
If you don’t have a Facebook, Google Plus, or Twitter account, you are missing out way too much. While some search engines do not consider social media as a huge factor, it still means something to them when an article is shared many times over.
Plus, it is free traffic for you. All you have to do, is to share your article and let people know.
Forums are not dead yet, and you can easily find popular forums to comment on with a “niche” + “forum” search on Google (e.g. Piano Forum).
While they are a good way to promote your stuff, it is also getting more difficult these days due to spam. So try to be more genuine on forums, and don’t spam.
D3) ANSWERING QUESTIONS
Quora and Yahoo Answers are good places to start. Just do a search for related questions, and point people to your article. For example, you have a tutorial on how to read guitar tabs. You can then have gentle answer like “I actually run a guitar related blog, and have a tutorial for that. Do check it out.”.
This may not be as easy, but still worth the time to build those links and credibility.
D4) SOCIAL BOOKMARKS
If Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter is not enough for you, try these.
- Locker Dome
There are probably a ton more, but I shall stop here.
D5) INFLUENCER OUTREACH
One method that I don’t really like, but it’s effective. What to do in this method? Find the influential people in your niche, and blast emails to all of them… In hope that one of them reads, find your article useful, and share it.
This is a lot of work, and the response rate is really low. But it works. Period.
So we have come the end of this guide, and this is my 3 steps process. A quick summary:
- Find a good topic to talk about. Don’t have to go head on against the big boys.
- Write a darn good article… an epic one.
- Promote it like crazy.
That ‘s all to this method. Seriously. But the key is to really create a beefy article, and keep your audience interested. As for the rest, it takes time and effort to promote and your article. If you do things right, it should slowly rise up the ranking ladder.
If your article falls short to be on the first page of search engines, repeat the cycle of thinking what people wants to read – rewrite, improve and promote again!
Yes it takes patience, but also, yes you can! Best of luck to your future works.
